Ice Day 2015
Fri, Feb 27, 2015
Materials: Frozen water balloons, pieces of wood or metal (popsicle stick, fork), salt, colored water, flashlight, magnifying lens, metal baking tray, plastic tray, wood
Activity: Freeze water balloons by placing them outside or in the freezer. Try freezing them on different surfaces (metal baking tray, plastic tray, wood), and record any temperatures that you can. Pop the frozen balloons and place them in a tub. Scratch at them with wood or metal. Pour salt on them. Use pipettes or spoons to pour colored water on them. Observe them with a flashlight or magnifying glass.
Research Questions: How does the surface that a balloon is frozen on affect how it freezes? How does salt affect the way ice melts? How do different materials affect the way ice looks or sounds when scratched?
