Acorns and Worms

Fri, Sep 26, 2014

Materials: A big pile of acorns.

Activity: Part 1: Collect acorns. Choose several ways to organize them. Part 2: Some acorns have worms in them. Find an acorn with a small hole in it; (a worm burrowed out of the acorn). Find an acorn, without a hole, that floats; (a worm is probably eating up the inside of the acorn). Find an acorn, without a hole, that sinks; (the inside of the acorn is intact). Part 3: Leave groups of acorns in cups, for a few days. Which group of acorns has worms burrowing out?

Big Questions: Why do some acorns have holes in them? Why do some acorns sink and others float?
