Draw with Rocks

Materials: Natural rocks, manufactured rocks (including sidewalk chalk)
Activity: Use different rocks to draw on different surfaces (boardwalk, concrete sidewalk, asphalt). Separate rocks into two piles: “writes well”, and “doesn't write well”. Scratch a rock with a penny, and compare how that relates to drawing with a rock. Glue googly eyes on your favorite rock.
Research Questions: How does the color of the rock affect the color of the chalk mark? How does the surface you draw on affect how the chalk mark appears? How does the size of a penny scratch on a rock affect how well the rock draws?
