Kool-Aid Soil Filter

Materials: Plastic cup, sand, soil, Kool-Aid
Activity: Poke 8 small holes in the bottom of a plastic cup. Fill it half full with sand or soil. Fill the rest of the cup with Red, Blue or Purple Kool-Aid. Collect liquid that drains out. What color is it? (Depending on soil type, red dyes and blue dyes either pass through the soil or are retained in the soil.)
Research Questions: How does soil type affect which dyes pass through and which dyes are retained?
