Sliding Around

Materials: jar lids, marbles, dice
Activity: Take your favorite small plastic character and attach it to a block using modeling clay. Spin the block around on balls or rollers! Sliding on Balls Activity: Place marbles in between two jar lids. Make sure one jar lid is larger than the other. Spin the top lid. It keeps spinning for awhile! Or try this larger version. Place golf balls on a cookie sheet. Spin a large block around on the golf balls! Sliding on Rollers Activity: Line up twenty pencils. Slide a pack of cards on top of the pencils. Watch it keep sliding! Or try this larger version. Line up 8 pieces of pvc pipe. Slide a large block on top of the pipes!
Research Questions: Try sliding objects on the ground, then on rollers, then on balls. How does what you are sliding the object on affect how it slides? Try different balls: golf balls, tennis balls, racquetballs. How does the texture of the ball affect how it slides? Try different rods: pvc pipes, foam noodles, Pringles cans. How does the texture of the rod affect how it slides?
