Materials: Celery, water, food coloring, carnation
Activity: Cut the base of the celery at a steep angle. Place it in colored water. Watch the leaves change color! Slice the celery open and see food coloring inside. Repeat the project with a carnation. You can even split the carnation stem into two strands. Place each strand in a different color of water and see if the carnation turns multiple colors.
Research Questions: Which color reaches the carnation first? How does cutting the carnation at a steep angle affect coloration? How do the removal of celery leaves affect how much water leaves the cup?
