Dry Ice Bubbles
Fri, Oct 19, 2012
Materials: Dry ice. It is sold at Leander HEB plus. Use gloves to handle it. Keep it in a cooler. I put dry ice in big plastic spice containers with perforated inner lids.
Activity: Melting Ice: Leave normal ice and dry ice on a plate in the sun. Watch normal ice melt into a liquid. Watch dry ice sublimate into a gas. Smoking Dry Ice: Fill a cup with warm water. Add a small amount of dry ice. Watch it 'smoke'! The gas escaping is carbon dioxide and water vapor; a cloud of tiny water droplets! Bubbling Dry Ice: Add a few drops of dish soap. Watch it 'bubble over'. Pop the bubbles and watch puffs of clouds form and disappear. The gas escapes and is trapped in soap bubbles. Burst bubbles and watch puffs of clouds form and disappear.
Research Questions: How does temperature of water affect 'smoking'? How does amount of dish soap affect 'bubbling'?
