Materials: Ice balloon, water, food coloring, salt, string, ice cubes
Activity: Ice Balloons: Partially freeze several sizes of water balloons and remove the balloon part. Drip colored water or colored salt water down the sides of the ice balloon. Ice on a String: Wet a piece of string or yarn. Place it over an ice cube. Sprinkle salt over the string. Wait 10-20 seconds. Pick up the string and it should lift the ice cube up.
Research Questions: What happens to an ice balloon if you put it in a tub of water? Add salt to it? Fill the center of the ball with food coloring? Try using different kinds of string, yarn or rope to lift an ice cube. Which kind of works better?
