Air Lift
Fri, Oct 21, 2011
Materials: Plastic bag, straw, pencil, some packing tape
Activity: Use a pencil to poke a hole in a plastic bag. Stick the straw in the hole. Add tape to seal the hole around straw. (If it's a zip-loc bag, then zip it shut. If it's an HEB bag, then tape off the open end, so air will not escape.) Place a book on top of the bag; keeping a few inches of the bag hanging out. Blow into the straw; inflate the bag; lift the book! Position several bags underneath something heavy, and try to lift it!
Research Questions: How does the size of bag affect the lift? Position of bag(s)? Material of bag? How does the weight of object affect the lift? Orientation of object?
