Materials: Plastic cup, tub of water, paper towel
Activity: Crumble up a paper towel. Place it in the bottom of the cup, so it stays inside, even if the cup is overturned. Turn the cup upside down, and push it into the tub of water. If you don't tip the cup, the air inside the cup won't escape, water can't enter, and the paper towel will remain dry!
Research Questions: How does the position of the plastic cup affect whether water enters the cup? If the paper cup has a hole in it, will it still work? How does water temperature affect the air in the cup?
