Go on a Dig
Fri, May 27, 2011
Materials: Tub filled with sand, rubber bands, a toy taken apart in four pieces, small shovel or paintbrush
Activity: Wrap two rubber bands around a tub filled with sand, dividing the sand into four quadrants. Break a terra-cotta pot into four pieces. Bury each piece in a quadrant of the tub. Let kids dig in each quadrant. Record the quadrant where each piece was found. When all pieces are found, put the pot back together.
Extension:: We used rocks and yarn to mark quadrants in the mulch at the playground. We hid one plastic egg in each quadrant. Each egg contained a toy. We marked where each toy was found, then categorized the toys. Hiding a puzzle piece in each egg would have been fun, too.
