Three Different Balloons
Fri, May 20, 2011
Materials: Two un-inflated balloons, one helium filled balloon, an empty water bottle, some vinegar, some baking soda and a funnel
Activity: Take one un-inflated balloon, blow it up and tie it off (the black balloon). Take the second un-inflated balloon, and use a funnel to pour some baking soda into it. Add vinegar to the water bottle. Without spilling the baking soda, firmly attach the balloon to the bottle. Invert the balloon; the baking soda pours on to the vinegar; the balloon inflates (the white balloon)! Tie off the third balloon. Get the helium filled balloon (the blue balloon). Let go of each balloon. What happens?
Big Questions: How do the three balloons look? How do they feel? What makes them different?
