Cloud in a Bottle

Fri, Apr 1, 2011

Materials: 2L bottle, rubbing alcohol, cork, bike pump

Activity: Pour a small amount of rubbing alcohol in a large plastic bottle. Use a bicycle pump to add air pressure to the bottle. Add a cork to the bottle, and stick the needle through the cork, so the air will not leak out. Release the cork. A cloud should form in the bottle! Increase air pressure and the cloud should dissipate.

Research Question: How does the amount of pressure affect presence of a cloud? How does addition of rubbing alcohol affect the cloud?
