OMatter and Measurement: Natural vs. Manufactured

Vocabulary: Natural Objects (Objects that are found around us. We can dig them out of the ground, grow them, or take them from living things.), Manufactured Objects (We can work with natural materials to change them into manufactured objects.)

Materials: Natural Objects are found around us; (wood, rubber, cotton, cork, metal, silk, leather, oil), Manufactured Objects (plastic, glass, paper)

Activity: Sort objects by property. Sort objects by another property. Objects can be classified by color, shape, size, texture other characteristics.

Measurement: Measure the distance around an object.

Resource: Williams, R. Author of Preschool Scientist (2010)

oBig Ideas from Texas Prekindergarten Guidelines

Properties of Matter: How does the number of objects in a pile affect how easy it is to sort them?

Force and Motion: How does the shape of an object affect how it spins?

Earth Science: Which objects came out of the ground?

Characteristics of Organisms: How are a variety of natural and manufactured radishes similar and how are they different? Try radishes in the ground, freshly cut radishes, decaying radishes and radishes made from wood, fabric and plastic.

Life Cycles of Organisms: How does the distance around a radish change, over time?

How Organisms Interact with the Environment: How does soil type (sandy soil, clay soil) affect radish growth?

Tools and Measurement: How does the distance around the object affect whether it will fit in a small treasure bag?
