oLife Science: Jar Trap

Vocabulary: Bug, insect, insect names, capture, collect, container, gather, net, release, magnifier

Materials: Bug jar

Activity: Create a “Bug Jar Trap”. Bury a jar in the ground, where the top of the jar is at ground level. Drop food scraps into the cup. Cross four sticks on top of the jar (for a ventilated cover), add a cover made of cardboard (for a solid cover), and a rock (to weight down the cardboard). Dig up the cup, the next day, and see what animals are trapped.

Measurement: Map where you found which animals, how many you found, weather conditions and include a photo of that animal..
